The ABC of pool maintenance

The ABC of pool maintenance 02

Swimming pool maintenance is crucially the heart of the swimming pool, so it is best to choose the filter installation accurately. We have summarized the most interesting tips and advice for you. Find out all about it here.

The ABC of pool maintenance

In addition to swimming pool water treatment, the right filter installation is crucial. The pump must be powerful enough to circulate the pool water. On the other hand, the filter itself must be large enough so that the pumped water does not flow through the filter “too fast”.

The ideal situation is a steady flow rate, with little pressure build-up, during long periods (24/24) through a very large filter with a high sand bed.

Below is our advice for an exact determination of the filter pump and the sand filter.

The heart of the pool!

Chlorine (disinfection) and ph (acidity) – are two concepts that you as a (future) swimming pool owner already know! But it The actual heart of the swimming pool installation is the filter installation. Everything starts with sufficient circulation of the pool water.

“The actual heart of the swimming pool installation is the filter installation.”

Turnover time – determination of the pump

The correct flow rate for the circulation of the filter pump determining is very simple. You calculate the volume of your pool in the number of m³ of the pool.
L x W x H e.g. 10 x 4 x 1.5 = 60m³

We count on a turnover time or circulation time of 4 hours, just like with public swimming pools. To do this, divide the volume of your swimming pool by 4. In this example 60m³ / 4 = 15m³/h

This means that every 4 hours the entire content of your swimming pool is pumped through the filter installation by the filter pump.

Reduce your electrical consumption TIP:

Provide one energy efficient pool pump with variable speed which can certainly deliver this flow rate. These filter pumps can circulate at three different speeds. This means less consumption and less noise when in operation. This way you can increase the filtration when using the pool and decrease it when the pool is ready.

Choosing the right sand filter to maintain the pool

Size your filter based on your circulation.

  • The BTL 520mm is for a pump with a maximum of 10m³/h
    • for swimming pools up to 40m³
  • The BTL 640mm is for a pump with a maximum of 15m³/h
    • for swimming pools up to 60m³
  • The BTL 760mm is for a pump with a maximum of 22m³/h
    • for swimming pools up to 85m³
  • The BTL 900mm is for a pump with a maximum of 30m³/h
    • for swimming pools up to 120m³

AFM Filter glass

In general, the filter will be filled with sand, which is always and still is a great way to filter. The only drawback to sand is that the serrated edge wears off after some time, creating small 'tunnels' in your sand bed.

This has been for several years now glass media on the market, this cannot wear off and in principle never needs to be replaced. An even further developed glass media AFM.

Backwash – Rewind

Last but not least is cleaning the filter. Perhaps the most important thing to do on time! Do a weekly backwash if you use your pool every day. Rinsing at regular intervals ensures clean and clear pool water. There are 6 positions on the 6-way valve of a sand filter:

  • Filter = this is the position to filter the pool water. In this position, the water flows from top to bottom through the sand or filter glass
  • Backwash = in this position the sand or the filter glass will be rinsed and all the dirt will be pumped to the sewer. The water flows from the bottom up through the pool filter
  • Rins = After backwashing, some dirt will remain in the pipes or lie loose on the sand. In this position, the water flows from the top back down into the filter, but the water still goes to the sewer
  • Waste = With this you pump the swimming pool water to the sewer and thus empty your swimming pool
  • circulation = the water will circulate with this position of the six-way valve, but will not flow through the sand filter
  • Close = With this you close the valve and no circulation of the pool water will be possible
  • Winter = no use of the valve and is an open position

TIP : to make the sand filter work better and to make the swimming pool water "crystal clear", it is best to use flocculant (flocculant). This will clump together small dissolved dirt particles and form into a large flake that can also be removed from the water with the sand filter. Buy flocculant here.

Why do you need to backwash?

When the filter is completely saturated with pollution, it goes without saying that the effect is greatly reduced. With the backwash you will push the water in the opposite direction. From bottom to top, in this way all the dirt is released from the filter media. You are going to push this directly to the sewer system. This way your filter can work optimally again!

Automation TIP: Know that backwashing the filter can be fully automated using a BESGO valve.
