You can heat the swimming pool with a heat exchanger in 2 ways with electricity or with the central heating heat, for example from the gas boiler or oil boiler.

General heat exchanger operation

A heat exchanger transfers heat from an external heat source such as a central heating boiler, solar water heater or heat pump to the swimming pool water. In the heat exchanger, the hot and cold water will flow in opposite directions along a spiral or other element. This makes the contact surface the largest. A heat exchange takes place here.

The hot central heating water (70-90°C) will transfer heat to the swimming pool water. But both streams are physically separated from each other. If you want to use it with a central heating boiler, an extra supply and return pipe must be provided.

Heat exchanger as an alternative to heat pump.

There are 2 different heat exchangers. The first version is one heat exchanger on central heating system in addition you have the electric heat exchanger which is more expensive, use a cheaper one to purchase and faster to assemble.

What should I pay attention to when choosing a heat exchanger?

The capacity of your heat exchanger is important if you want to quickly heat up your water and/or the size of your swimming pool.

With a heat exchanger via a central heating system, the capacity determines the speed at which your water is to be heated. Not necessarily the size of your pool. But the more power the faster the water will be warm. A 40 kW heater can perfectly heat up a large swimming pool, but will take longer than a 60 kW heater.

Keep in mind that the higher the temperature of the primary water, the faster your swimming pool can heat up. Today, high-efficiency boilers are often installed. These work on less consumption and a lower temperature. This is disadvantageous if you want to work with a heat exchanger based on the central heating system to heat your swimming pool water.

This is different with an electric heat exchanger. There it depends on the size of your pool.

Installation

After the filter, first place your heat exchanger, then the injection piece for chlorine and/or pH. This way you protect it against corrosion.

Heating swimming pool water via central heating system is a very effective way to heat water. But this way is not so good energy saving and is environmentally unfriendly. It can also be done through solar energy. The solar collectors transfer the heat to the exchanger. This is more environmentally friendly and very affordable.

Benefits of heat exchange

  • Quick and easy to assemble
  • Rapid heating of your swimming pool water
  • Can heat all year round

Disadvantage

  • It is quite expensive to run.
  • For economy, it is best to choose one heat pump.

Swimming all year round

The combination heat pump + heat exchanger makes it possible to swim all year round. Depending on the type of heat pump, you only need to use the heat exchanger for a few months.

An oversized full inverter heat pump (all seasons) will make it possible to heat the swimming pool for 9 to 10 months. If it continues to freeze outside, the heat pump will lose its efficiency. Certain types of heat pumps can be used all year round in the swimming pool "keep warm" if the pool itself is well insulated.

The heat exchanger also makes it possible to bridge the winter months.

Electric heat exchanger

Electric heat exchanger

There are heat exchangers based on electricity. These are mainly provided for smaller (set-up) swimming pools.
Benefit of this heat exchanger is that you can heat all year round.
Disadvantage is that they do not work energy-efficiently like a heat pump.

Via central heating on the gas or fuel oil boiler

Another type of heat exchanger is via the Ccentral vheating. You heat the swimming pool water using the hot water from your central heating system. The higher the primary temperature, the faster it can be transferred to the pool water. This will often be installed in combination with a heat pump to be able to heat an indoor swimming pool all year round, for example.

Double-walled heat exchanger for swimming pool heating

A double-walled heat exchanger is mandatory for public swimming pools. This eliminates the risk of the tap water ever coming into contact with the pool water or vice versa.

Titanium heat exchanger

For swimming pools with salt water, or water treatment based on electrolysis, it is certainly recommended to take a heat exchanger made of titanium. This is corrosion resistant. Not all heat exchangers are suitable for use in combination with salt water. In general, a titanium version will also have a longer lifespan compared to its alternatives.
