TIP 1 – provide (extremely) energy-efficient heating

Back in 2005, a swimming pool heating coupled to a gas wall boiler or an oil boiler was the common way of heating. Nowadays you heat a swimming pool with an energy-efficient air/water heat pump. Where a heat exchanger was used in the past, this is now done via a bypass on the swimming pool circuit. The connection is electrical, heat is extracted from the air via a fan, coolant and a cooling package. (read here how a swimming pool heat pump works)

The inverter swimming pool heat pump

InverX heat pumpSince 2005, we have seen the air/water swimming pool heat pump make a steep advance as swimming pool heating. Back in time was one COP (Coefficient Of Performance)  value of 2.5 current. Year after year we saw swimming pool heat pumps become quieter and more efficient. In 2017, the frequency-controlled heat pump for swimming pools was introduced with significantly better COP values. The latest new development is the stepless swimming pool heat pump with different speeds. This pool heater is awesome economical and whisper quiet and has a COP value of up to 16.

Heat pumps have become THE reference pool heating. Only in new-build homes can it be interesting to work with a heat exchanger and to heat via the (energy-efficient) heating of the home.

Solar collectors the most energy efficient pool heating

If you wish to heat your swimming pool (almost) completely free of charge, this is possible with solar collectors. These are flow-through panels or tubes in which the water of your swimming pool is heated by the heat of the sun. Solar collectors work with a 3-way valve or with a separate (small) circulation pump. The consumption is only the consumption of the small circulation pump or the filter pump if you work with a 3-way tap to pump the water through the collectors.

There are also flat systems with black HDPE flow-through plates in which the water heats up. There are also flow domes for flat roofs with tubes that can heat the water for an energy-efficient swimming pool.

2nd TIP – install an energy efficient variable speed pump

A very handy and easy tip to apply quickly is to replace your existing filter pump with one energy efficient pool pumpThat's handy nowadays there is an energy-efficient version of every current filter pump.

  • the first known frequently placed pump is the “orange” Badu 90 which you replace with the Badu 90 ECO VS
  • second is the gray Kripsol KS, Kripsol Koral or blue Fiberpool pump replaceable by the Hayward K Flo VSTD filter pump
  • the last known filter pump is the Hayward super pump, the well-known swimming pool pump with square lid to be replaced by the Hayward Super Pump USA

Tip 3 – Place a summer cover or a solar roller shutter

It the greatest loss of heat occurs at the surface of a swimming pool. Due to evaporation and cooling (during the night), the swimming pool water cools down considerably. During the day, the pool heating ensures the heating and therefore the extra energy consumption. Prevent heat loss through your pool water cover the surface preferably with a solar cover and thus create an energy-efficient swimming pool.

“A solar cover on the swimming pool ensures EXTRA heating of the swimming pool water. So you use less energy to heat the swimming pool water with the heat exchanger or the pool heat pump.”

Since 2005 we have been selling a lot of summer souls to cover the swimming pool surface. This summer sailing were further developed a few years ago. So we completely switched from the standard summer sails to the summer sails with a GEO bubble structure. These sails have a solar coating and a larger contact surface with the water. This makes them much better and these tarpaulins also provide a stronger and better solar/heating effect.

In addition to the summer covers, you can cover your swimming pool in many different ways, such as a swimming pool shutter or, for example, a swimming pool roof. The roller shutters for swimming pools have also undergone an evolution. The standard PVC slats were replaced by much stronger ones PC (polycarbonate) slats, solar and ANTI ALG. The PC Eclipse slats are the cream of the crop in terms of sustainability, safety and, above all, heat production.

READING TIP : in 2015 we already wrote a blog article about this: New generation of roller shutter slats

Tip 4 – From 300W lamps to energy-efficient LED lamps

The 300W swimming pool lamps have been replaced by LED lamps for 15 years. The first versions of swimming pool LEDs regularly showed leakage or teething problems. The new generation of power LEDs for swimming pools are very reliable and of high quality. This tip is also easy to apply. The LED lights for swimming pools fit perfectly into the housing of the built-in parts in the wall of the swimming pool. You can replace the lamp with the long cable on the quay of the swimming pool. So your pool does not need to be emptied.

Be in swimming pools PAR 56 lamps (diameter of 17.5 cm) used. A retro fit is available for easy replacement of the pool lamp. With this kit you can quickly replace the old lamp with the new LED lamp.

YOU saves not only with LED lamps in your swimming pool electricity, the life of an LED lamp is also much longer. So this provides extra peace of mind because you don't have to replace the lamps as often. But the cost price for the new lamps is also eliminated.

5th tip – insulate the pipes under the ground

Energy efficient swimming pool pipes At about 3 out of 10 swimming pools that we build, the PVC flex pipes are now insulated under the ground. We also insulate the pipes on the back of the concrete tub. This can be done with pipe insulation or, for example, with XPS panels between which the pipes are placed.

If you have a built-up swimming pool, you can work with the black pipes for an energy-efficient swimming pool. If you place them in the sun, the swimming pool water will also heat up in these pipes. The simplest way of heating a swimming pool is, in principle, a very long black PE pipe. Easy to place in the garden between the shrubs, for example.

Our 6th TIP – for an energy-efficient swimming pool is insulation of the swimming pool

In-ground pools can insulate you in several ways. The most energy-efficient swimming pool is the swimming pool with Thermostone PS blocks. (Polystyrene). You can also insulate a concrete swimming pool on the outside with eg XPS insulation plates. These insulation boards are available in different thicknesses. Around the pool can also be supplemented with insulating foam concrete instead of stable, for example.

This tip can help you only apply beforehand. Once the pool has been installed, no more insulation can be placed around the pool under the ground.

tip 7 – Replace your sand filter with a cartridge filter

Energy efficient swimming pool swimclear cartridge filterIn countries where the cost price of energy, water and products is even more expensive, the Swimclear cartridge filters from Hayward a huge success. In addition, the legislation regarding water and energy consumption as well strict is are these pool cartridge filters a solution. Even if it discharge of chlorinated swimming pool water is prohibited is, is this type of swimming pool filter with filter cartridges a solution.

The use of this cartridge filter replaces the swimming pool sand filter.

obtain an energy-efficient swimming pool with the Swimclear filter :

  • less filter load and pressure build-up, resulting in the filter pump consumes less
  • a lot of finer filtration than a sand filter and therefore clearer water
  • no backwash requires a lot less water and products is wasted
  • easier to use, the cartridges should be cleaned once or twice a year
  • It to replace of the filter cartridge a lot easier than replacing filter sand or filter glass
  • compact pool filter compared to a sand filter

These cartridge filters from Hayward are not yet well established in Belgium and the Netherlands, but we firmly believe in the future of this filter principle. The energy, water and product savings are incalculable and ensures a very energy-efficient swimming pool. You save up to 6000L of water per year. Saving water also means saving energy, products and, of course, a lot of water.

8th tip – Heat cover for indoor pools or indoor pools

Energy efficient pool heat coverHeat cover provides a reduction of 50% on pool water evaporation. This product will change the surface tension of the water, resulting in less evaporation and therefore less heat loss. This allows you to realize savings of up to 46% on your gas consumption, for example.

It Heat cover product comes into its own when there is an uncovered indoor swimming pool or a swimming pool with a roof. If the water surface is not covered with a summer cover or a roller shutter, the savings are enormous. The tests took place in public swimming pools that are generally not covered. This does not detract from the fact that even with private swimming pools an enormous energy saving can be achieved on the consumption of the swimming pool heating.

tip 9 – an energy-efficient swimming pool with an automatic water treatment

An automatic pool water treatment will ensure that your pool water has a better stable quality. As a result, you have to flush away less water, for example by rinsing the sand filter in the event of problems. Flushing water and adding fresh water again results in higher energy consumption.

A automatic pool water treatment ensures a LOWER consumption of chemical products as AQT Liquid Chlorine or AQT Liquid pH min. Moreover, these products are also a lot cheaper than the fixed products for manual swimming pool water treatment.

The more stable water quality provides the additional advantage that swimming is more pleasant. You will no longer end up in a situation where the water is cloudy or green.

READING TIP : Make green swimming pool water clear.

the tenth tip – is to install an automation for an energy-efficient swimming pool.

The very latest new pool controls also have a lot of functions to save energy. This way you can access the Hayward Control Station and the Oxilife also drive a variable speed filter pump. This way you always filter optimally.

The APP on these new swimming pool controls also allows you to operate the heat pump remotely. This allows you to pool heat pump if, for example, the solar panels on your home produce electricity. This also makes a very energy-efficient swimming pool.

The new swimming pool controls also include, for example, a smart function or an eco function that ensures that you save energy.
