The 3 most important pillars of an energy-efficient swimming pool. Also a swimming pool can energy efficient! A luxury pool but you don't pay blue – best available/rendering technology. More than ever, making your swimming pool energy efficient is no longer a question, but a matter of course. Read here 3 TIPS and clear advice to save on your energy consumption.
1. Energy-efficient pool heating
The economical heating
Everything starts with an energy-efficient swimming pool heating. The most successful product of recent years is of course the HEAT PUMP. This is the ideal heater for people with solar panels. After all, the electricity that the heating needs is free. The COP (Coefficient Of Performance) has increased in recent years from 5.9 to even 15!!! (type Dura PRO INVERTER)
If you don't have EV solar panels, the best choice is one SOLAR system. A comparative study showed that Blozoen solar collectors are the most efficient system for solar swimming pool heating. The patented tubes heat up your water very quickly with the heat and radiation of the sun. For the BLOZOEN SOLAR COLLECTORS do you need a flat roof? (More about sustainable pool heating)
Where is the heat loss?
The greatest heat loss of the swimming pool water is at the water surface. The cover of your swimming pool with PVC or PC SOLAR slats is the first investment you should consider. The best performing slats at the moment are the PC Solar Anti Alg slats. Due to their specific design, they generate up to 25% higher solar effect.
2. Reduced electricity consumption
The consumption of the filter pump
In addition to the heating, the electricity consumption of the filter pump is the biggest consumer. To reduce the electrical consumption of the filtration pump, Pentair was the first to launch the FREQUENCY CONTROLLED FILTER PUMP (Intelliflo). With a frequency-controlled pump you can quickly save 250 – 750 € per year. Of all consumers, you can save the most in addition to heating by installing a frequency-controlled filter pump on site. In the meantime, all current brands (Hayward, Speck, Astral, …) have launched variants of pump types with frequency control. Is your pool pump 10 – 15 years old? Then almost certainly a VS (Variable Speed) Type is already available. The replacement is therefore quite simple on an existing swimming pool installation. This investment will pay for itself in 2.5 – 3J. Here is an overview of energy-efficient swimming pool pumps.

Advantage of a frequency controlled filter pump
An additional advantage of a frequency-controlled filter pump is the quieter operation. In other words, the pump runs very quietly at a lower flow rate. Due to the lower flow rate, the performance of your filtration will also improve (the filter speed will be halved, the filtration efficiency quadrupled - Source: Dryden Aqua), which in turn will result in clearer pool water.

Economical LED lamps
Replace the lamps with low-consumption ones POOL LED LAMPS is also a smart investment. Since their introduction in 2008 – 2009, these lamps have become systematically cheaper, but also more efficient (see Power LEDs). The price of swimming pool LED lamps has also fallen sharply in the meantime. The lifespan of LED lamps is also much longer. Where replacing the 300W PAR56 lamp used to be a tedious job, this is almost no longer necessary. In the meantime, we have already installed about 100 LED lamps and our experience is extremely positive.
3. Reduced water consumption
The automatic flush valve
A third pillar is reducing water consumption. Because lowering water consumption ensures that you reduce the costs of heating the fresh pool water. But the use of chemicals also decreases, as does the cost of (fresh) water. It is best to reduce water consumption by using a AUTOMATIC BACKWASH VALVE to install. This automated backwash ensures a more accurate and economical backwash of the sand filter.
A multicyclone pre-filter
In addition, you can have one MULTICYCLONE to consider. This product has also won several awards at the swimming pool fair in the past. The Multicyclone provides a pre-filtration of coarse particles (80% of the incoming dirt). This ensures a lower load on the sand filter. To rinse this multicyclone you have a water loss of 30 – 50L of water. For rinsing the sand filter quickly 750 – 1250L of water. Due to the lower load on the sand filter, you can reduce the backwash frequency (up to 40% less backwash) and thus save a lot of water (read water - heating - chemicals).
Filter glass for less water consumption
A final step in reducing water and product consumption is to fill the filter with GLASS AFM (Activated Filter Material). It DAISY principle from Dryden Aqua is the technically elaborated method of swimming pool water filtration for reduced water and chemical consumption (backwash rinse water reduction to 50% – chlorine reduction to 80%). The DAISY principle also ensures perfectly clear and pure swimming pool water.

Several of these products have won awards such as the Golden Wave or the Innovation award at Piscina Barcelona in the past! In addition, there are many technical options to make your swimming pool project energy efficient, such as the insulating the tub. Stainless steel swimming pools also have many advantages in terms of energy consumption. Wholesalers (such as Pomaz – Pomaz' Zwemvisie) are also increasingly playing the card of energy-efficient swimming pools.
